Security News Shootout!

At the end of each month, two consultants from Matta put forward three of their favourite stories in information security and invite a guest judge to pick the best story.

There's no prizes, only fame or shame.

This month, and for the next 3 months, Senior Consultant at Matta Rob Connolly will be seeing if he can dethrone the champion Nick Baskett.

I've found the whole topic of Chinese hackers very interesting. There are many theories out there about how much of the hacks are state organised, or state sponsored, and whether the Chinese authorities are in control over the situation. Is this a watershed in the development of mass organised, government led or sanctioned cybercrime, and what does this mean going forward. I imagine other governments are taking notes, and I wonder if we're really ready...

A recent Google soundbyte was that there was no need to afraid of your toaster - but one hacker has made a toaster that can indeed hack you

 The Result!

This month the judging was done by Tony Meholic, Head of Information Security at First Bank of Delaware.

And the winner is.... Rob with his story on the hacker has made a toaster that can hack computers:

"I am seeing more and more appliances being equipped for internet connectivity (I am still trying to understand the reasoning behind your refrigerator having a TV screen and internet connection). If this could be done with a toaster think what havoc could be wrought with a microwave oven or stove!"
